It was in the late 1940s that mining activities to extract quartzite began in São Tomé das Letras, in the south of Minas Gerais, using drill bits, manual dismantling of blocks and oxcarts for the transport of the extracted ore.
The production was very small, it was basically a family activity, carried out since that time by the Capistrano family, which demonstrates their tradition in the field and covering stones.
The family company, located in Pico do Gavião, is even the oldest enterprise to have legal ore extraction in the region, with the first quartzite mining ordinance in the municipality of São Tomé das Letras.
During the following decades, the market grew and new technologies were adapted and used in extraction. With this growing evolution, the generation of jobs has become one of the main characteristics of the activity in the municipality and region.
