Description:
Rock type: Phyllite slate.
Age: Ordovician (approx. 460 million years).
Otta slate represents what was originally a clay/siltstone formation which during the Caledonian period was deformed and metamorphosed with the foundation of regular cleavage strata.
Good slate deposits occur in tight fold structures. Sheet thickness varies between 8 and 80mm.
In the lower part of a slate formation the phyllite contains large crystals of needle-like hornblend (Pillarguri and H?gs?ter).
Pillarguri is exclusively quarried to the south of Ottadal, whilst H?gs?ter is quarried on the north side. In certain areas the slate can be found with a rusty surface.
This rust colour occurs in cleavage planes which have been exposed to erosion from water and to oxygen.

Can Norway's Pillarguri Sort Phyllite be used exterior applications in hot climates?
Norways Pillarguri Sort Phyllite is a type of metamorphic rock that is commonly used for exterior applications such as cladding, paving, and walling. However, its usability in hot climates may depend on several factors. Phyllite is known for its natural beauty, durability, and resistance to weathering. It can withstand extreme temperature changes, making it suitable for various climates. However, the specific suitability of Pillarguri Sort Phyllite for hot climates would depend on a few factors: 1. Heat Absorption: In hot climates, darker-colored stones tend to absorb more heat compared to lighter-colored stones. Pillarguri Sort Phyllite is generally dark in color, which may result in higher heat absorption. This can make it uncomfortable to touch or walk on in hot weather. 2. Thermal Conductivity: The thermal conductivity of the stone determines how quickly it transfers heat. Phyllite has moderate thermal conductivity, allowing it to dissipate heat to some extent. However, this property may not be as efficient as other stones specifically designed for hot climates. 3. Maintenance: Phyllite stones generally require minimal maintenance, but intense exposure to high temperatures might impact their durability over time. Long-term exposure to hot climates may potentially cause fading, weakening, or surface deterioration if proper maintenance measures are not taken. Considering these factors, Pillarguri Sort Phyllite can be used in hot climates for exterior applications, but it may not be the most ideal choice. There are other types of stones, such as granite or limestone, which are better suited for extreme heat conditions due to their lighter color, higher heat resistance, and lower heat absorption. It is important to consult with local professionals or stone suppliers who have experience with the specific climate conditions in your area. They can provide more accurate advice and recommend suitable stone options based on your needs and preferences.
