Labradorite stone is a moderately hard, relatively fragile rock. At denseness of 2700-2860 kg/m3, compression strength is 162 MPa. But stones with strength 40-90 MPa occur more frequently. Flexing strength is not more than 621 MPa. Formation is characterized by high abrasion resistance – its wearability is about 0,5g/m3.
Water adsorption – not more than 0,21. It should be mentioned that the samples produced on different deposits, can have different physical and mechanical properties. Rock structure can also be different: coarse-grained, uniformly crystalline.
Looking at labradorite stone on the picture, we can note that the colour of natural material is mostly grey, brown or black. Light samples occur quite rarely. Blue iridescence is characteristic. Red or yellow can be seen more rarely.
Using of rock as a decorative stone is possible due to coarse-grained structure and colour change properties depending on the angle of light incidence. Labradorite, use of which is conditioned by non ordinary structure, is widely used as a facing material. But, having in its structure chemical compositions, unstable for atmospheric impact, it is used most frequently for internal works. In case of using the stone for outer decoration the traces of iron corrosion, the so-called rust, can be seen on the stone surface over the course of time. And, in its turn, it will negatively affect decorative characteristics of clad surface. Labradorite and properties of high resistance to abrasion capacity allow to use material as a paving tile. Today the tile of such kind is quite successful alternative to traditional material from concrete. With the same result the stone is used as a cladding material in monumental architecture. But, nevertheless, some samples with rich blue and green iridescence allow to use the rock as decorative rock and ornamental stone. The most distinguished places where the use of labradorite can be noted is the Moscow Metro, Mausoleum decoration, basis of Moscow hotel, the alley of hero-cities in Alexander Garden and “Veterans’ Avenue” — Metro Station in Saint-Petersburg.
Labradorite, being the most widespread representative of plagioclases group, occur in the rocks of main composition (gabbro, anorthosite). The rock is widespread in mountains Adirondack (USA) and Wichita (Oklahoma state). Big deposits are known in Canada, Finland, Norway and Ukraine.
