This impressive stone that comes from the Ledmore Quarry in Sutherland is one of only two Mainland Britain’s true marbles (Ledmore Green being the other). The Ledmore Grey marble contains large white veins made up of calcium compounds, black veining originating from organic compounds and brown veining from copper compounds. This geological history combined creates an amazing stone. With the initial deposits laid down 600 million years ago, the veining is comparatively rather young at 430 million years. The creation of this stone occurred when syenite igneous rock thrust it’s way up through the Durness Limestone deposits, creating Serpentine and Brucite, the colours of which have been brought to life now the blocks have been slabbed and polished. Typical Ledmore Grey marble slab sizes are 2.19 x 1.5m however this varies. It cannot be guaranteed that new Stoneycombe slab will match exactly samples given out.
