Hand Carved Soapstone Elephant with Baby Inside Statue

This intricately hand-carved elephant has another carved inside with great detail. The mother elephant figurine has been handmade in traditional Indian jali work or openwork carving (intricate latticework having a pattern of openings). The inner baby elephant is a solid stone carving. This pachyderm looks majestic with a pair of carved rosettes on the head and intricate decoration adorning the head flowing down the truck. It is carved from a single block of stone with great care as a wrong hit will ruin the entire piece. Each is a work of art that is unique. Carved in Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal in India.
