Traditional craftsmen and artisans are enjoying new business opportunities after joining an online initiative, Sonal Khetarpal writes

For seven years, Kripa Shankar Sharma was running a small business Akshar Moorti Art for making marble idols in Jaipur. In 2012 he got to know from a friend about eBay’s initiative to bring traditional craftsmen and artisans online. After he got enrolled, he started getting five to six orders a month compared with just one earlier.

Due to the additional earning, he included another vertical of making handicrafts in his business. He had to get his brother involved too, to meet the growing demand.

The Indian handicrafts industry is estimated to be $7-8 billion in size with 34.5 million artists in the country.

"Due to high competition and limited exposure in India, eBay provides a global platform to these artists to sell their craft through its 40 international sites, each for a different country. If an artist registers on one, he gets exposure to all the markets without moving from his hometown," shares Navin Mistry, eBay India's head for retail exports.

Shankar Sharma says, "Most of the orders I get are from countries like Australia, Germany, Thailand and Peru. So, every time I get an order from a country I haven’t heard about I quickly read up about it on my mobile."

What also helps is that eBay handholds these artists on the whole process of selling online, from setting up an online store, to uploading product information, and finally shipping the packed parcel to the customer.

Gayatri Patnaik, MD of Utkalika, Orissa State Cooperative Handicrafts Corporation, who got her association registered with eBay in April this year said: "When we got registered with them, eBay did a whole day training session for our staff in our showroom in Delhi explaining the process of selling online. Since we are very new to whole concept, we faced a lot of difficulties and would get stuck every now and then, in spite of the workshop. But, there are two gentlemen from eBay whom we call and they solve our queries immediately."

eBay also shares information with the artists about the new trends in fashion and helps them determine the right price for their products.

Mistry says the handicrafts in domestic market are sold at around eight times the price and in international market the price can be up to 20 times. Since eBay works on a marketplace model, the inventory is owned by the artisans.

"We don’t have any subscription or registration fees. All the payments go to the artisans directly and eBay get a maximum of 10 per cent commission on every sale," shares Mistry.

The handicraft category for eBay has been seeing 110 per cent growth and contributes to 20 per cent sales for all lifestyle products. Due to this increasing interest, they have been aggressively tying up with several local associations and artists.

In the beginning of this year, eBay India signed a MoU with Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association (DHMA), a 125-year-old association of over 4,000 traders in clothing, textiles and transports and saw its seller base increase by 30 per cent.

Now, they have more than 5,000 registered sellers of handicrafts selling more than one lakh handcrafted products on their site.
