Marble is a metamorphic rock that has undergone physical and chemical changes over time due to high temperatures and pressures. Marble is originally limestone, a soft stone consisting mainly of calcite. Under high temperatures and pressures caused by magma or tectonic plates, limestone begins to recrystallize, changing the structure of the rock and causing calcite crystals to grow and chain. Marble is found in many parts of the world, from Macedonia to Vermont, but the most famous varieties come from Italy and Greece, where it is usually the purest in color.
Purity, of course, refers to the fact that there is no color change in a particular sample of stone. The purest marble is almost entirely white or very light in color, although for many people colored veins are a much needed feature. These veins are caused by mineral deposits which either existed in the original limestone or in the transformation of limestone into marble. Minerals tend to settle in layers called veins. Depending on the amount of minerals contained in the stone, the texture can be very small, delicate lines or large striking bands of color that look like smoke inside a marble.
Minerals that appear in the recrystallization process sometimes give the entire block of marble a variety of colors. Blue, gray, pink, and red are the most common, but green, purple, and yellow marbles can also be found. Clay, mica, quartz, and iron oxide are some of the most common minerals found in marble and cause red, gray, and white colors or veins. Hematite and iron oxide are also common and can produce red, pink, and brown, while limonite causes yellow and serpentine to be deep, rich green.
Grey Marble
Marble is still widely used in architecture today, and can be found in churches, town halls, and historic buidlings. However, it can also be found in humble homes.
