These are the brightly colored (usually yellow and/or red) tiles you'll see on sidewalks, subways, underground, subways, bus and tram stops, and other public places. These tiles are marked with small bumps and can be installed anywhere that claims to be accessible to the visually impaired.

What is Tactile paving?

These patterns are called haptic paving (also known as surface indicators or detectable warning signs). The paving is designed to inform visually impaired pedestrians of any changes in the area. This could be a transition from sidewalk to road, or alerting commuters to their footsteps on stairs. The pattern is often a different color from the sidewalk to provide color contrast.

Types of Tactile Paving Patterns

No two tactile paving pattern designs are the same. Similar to Braille, different modes send different messages, from safe paths to immediate danger. There are three types of tactile paving patterns: attention, lead, and diamond.

The attention pattern area is a row of truncated domes. This mode comes in two forms: grid and offset. A grid pattern is a square grid of evenly spaced domes. This mode warns of falling curbs at the end of the sidewalk. Offset Attention Mode is a staggered version of Grid Mode used to warn of large holes or chases ahead, and they are mostly used in train stations.

The guide pattern is a circular stick-like line. This mode can operate in two different ways (across or along a path), sending two different messages. Guiding patterns on the path warn of a tripping hazard ahead, while gold-plated patterns along the path show a safe route.

Finally, the diamond pattern is evenly spaced diamond tiles. This mode warns of fast-moving vehicles ahead, such as trains.
