Stone Information

The Classic Botticino Marble has characteristics that make it ideal for use in indoor and outdoor environments: compactness, low absorbency and porosity, resistance to compression, flexibility and wear .

Botticino Marble is the commercial name of a quality of compact (pure) micritic limestone of beige colour, extracted in the quarries of Botticino , Nuvolento , Nuvolera , Rezzato , Serle and in the past also Mazzano , in the province of Brescia .

The limestone deposit east of Brescia, from which the Botticino Classico marble is extracted, was formed between 190 and 60 million years ago by the slow and continuous process of sedimentation, cementation and recrystallization of calcareous mud in a " lagoon sea " of Mesozoic age . The tropical climate hosted organisms which, fossilized, now constitute one of the peculiarities of marble.

The chromatic variety of Botticino Classico is in fact originated from the different concentration and trend of inclusions of organic and inorganic origin in the homogeneous background paste composed of fine, carbonate and predominantly calcareous mud, which takes the name of micrite .

The Marble Museum

The Botticino Marble Museum was founded in 1996, supported by the municipality and the marble quarryers' cooperatives; the collection was born thanks to the commitment of the volunteers of the "La Pietra di Botticino" group and of Mr. Forti, an elderly quarryman who, together with his son, collected a large number of tools, photos and documents relating to the world of the marble quarries of Botticino. [10] The museum is partly developed in an open-air itinerary in the area affected by previous quarries which are now abandoned.
