Usually black Marquinia marble is treated with a final glossy finish to enhance the color contrast, however the very fine grain of the material makes it suitable for a large number of different finishes.

Marquina black marble takes its name from the country in Spain (and more precisely in the Basque area) where it is quarried. Marquinia black marble is one of the best known and most popular Spanish natural stones and is in fact used as black marble in projects around the world. It is considered by many to be the black marble par excellence: one of the reasons for its success is undoubtedly its high production which makes it easily available throughout the world and at a relatively low price. The black Marquina marble quarries produce blocks of two distinct qualities: the first quality of black Marquina marble block is characterized by an intense black, while the second has a lighter background more tending towards grey.

Technically, Marquina black marble is a calcite stone since calcite is present at 98%. In addition to calcite, black Marquina marble contains black minerals such as carbon or bitumen (generated from mud) which give it its characteristic deep black color. Black Marquina marble is in fact categorized as bituminous lime. The dark and compact background of the black Marquinia marble is then crossed by evident white veins (which can also be abundant) mainly with a diagonal pattern and by small fossil residues of the same colour. On the surface it is possible to notice slight cracks, the so-called cracks, which are normal and represent a specification of this type of black marble. Marquina black marble is rather delicate and, for this reason, it is generally recommended to reinforce the underlying part with screening and resin processes . Apart from this aspect, black Marquina marble enjoys good technical characteristics and is used for all kinds of applications. The most used finish to accentuate the natural brilliance of the material is undoubtedly polishing .
