Stone Information
Verona red marble is a nodular limestone which, as regards the classification of stone materials, falls into the group of polishable limestones.
It contains fossil skeletons of ammonites and belemnite beaks immersed in a microsparitic matrix formed by fecal pellets . It can be extracted from the Rosso Ammonitico Veronese formation , emerging and extracted in the Lessini Mountains . Among the various buildings built with this marble are the Baptistery of Parma , the columns of the cloister of the Basilica of San Zeno in Verona , the column-bearing lions of the Door of the Red Lions of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo , the sepulchral ark of Berardo Maggi in the old Cathedral of Brescia and the Church of the Santissimo nome di Maria in the Workers' Village of Crespi d'Adda (Bg).
This material was also widely used in the city of Venice. Of note is the wellhead of Ca' d'Oro , sculpted around 1427 by the workers who gravitated around the workshop of the Bon family, Giovanni (father) and Bartolomeo (son). Also in red Verona marble is the span between the ninth and tenth columns of the Loggia Foscari of the Palazzo Ducale , a pair that clearly stands out from the rest of the architectural order, in Istrian stone. The meaning of this chromatic anomaly has not yet been discovered, although it is agreed that the space between the columns must have been symbolic for the announcement of government decisions to the crowd who could witness it in the square.
