Stone Information

Marble is the most prestigious and well-known natural material , however the many varieties existing in nature can confuse non-experts in the sector. Calacatta and Carrara
marble are two stones that have become famous thanks to the artistic legacy of Michelangelo, Donatello and Canova, just to mention a few, and come from the Apuan Alps area, also known for being the cradle of another very fascinating and dear to us marble , the Arabescato Vagli .

What does Carrara marble mean?

Carrara marble can be defined as an umbrella term that underlies several types of marbles, including Calacatta, Bianco di Carrara and Statuario . During the Renaissance, Carrara was used by Michelangelo and Donatello for their works of art, thus making it known throughout the world and confirming marble in general as a valuable and timeless material.

Carrara vs Calacatta Marble: a guide

Carrara marble and Calacatta are two well- known natural stones extracted in Italy, in the Tuscany region. Since this extraction area is very vast, from one quarry to another, the marble can slightly differ and take on peculiar characteristics. Both are suitable for floor, wall and kitchen counter applications.

Carrara marble

Carrara is an Italian marble extracted in Tuscany , in the Carrara basin . Depending on the peculiarities of its extraction point, it has a more or less white background color and a black-grey veining which can be more or less dense.

Among the different types of marble, we have Carrara C and CD which differ in their shade of white. Excelling in prestige, however, is the Statuario which stands out from all others for its absolute whiteness dictated by a particular crystalline structure which made it Michelangelo's favourite.
