onyx: its history and characteristics The term "onyx" usually indicates two families of distinct rocks:
siliceous onyx (black with white streaks) and calcareous onyx (or alabastrite, available in different colours).
From a mineralogical point of view it is classified as a variety of chalcedony, i.e. quartz in compact microcrystalline masses,
whose color varies from opaque to semi-opaque. It is a precious and delicate material at the same time, translucent, very compact and also backlit.
If the etymology of the name has stuck with you, there are two explanations about it: one linked to its appearance -
onyx in fact recalls the shape of nails - and one linked to the myth. According to legend, in fact, onyx was created by Cupid,
who cut Venus' nails while she slept and scattered them on the floor. It was the Fates who subsequently transformed them into gems.
The Latins, however, renamed the onyx "marmor alabastrum" in reference to the Alabastra fortress of Thebes,
an area on the central outskirts of Greece particularly rich in quarries. In ancient Rome, this stone was widely used for glyptics (the art of carvings)
as, thanks to the different layers of color from which it is composed, light reliefs were obtained that were clearly visible on the dark background:
just think of the numerous cameos made of onyx that have come down to us. Thanks to the wide chromatic variety and its hardness and brightness,
onyx is used in different environments and for different uses.
