Kocber Sandstone Quarry

Kocber Sandstone is the local name for sandstone quarried near the village of Kocbeře, which, together with the other sites of Kukský-stanovicky, Betlémský, Doubravický and Hradishtský sandstone that are not operated today, fall under the collective name of Královédvor sandstone. Sandstone has been mined in the village of Kocbeře since time immemorial, as evidenced by the now flooded quarry in the center of the village. Quarrying achieved a great boom in the Baroque period, mainly thanks to the extensive activities of Count Špork and the work of the sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun, who created, among other things, the well-known set of Nativity sculptures from this type of sandstone.
