Travertine is a form of limestone which is porous and occurs in white, tan, and cream-colored varieties.
The stone is formed by a process of precipitation of carbonate minerals from solution in ground and surface waters, for example nearby waterfalls. It often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and what is more, it is common to find well preserved fossils of plants or shells inside as a result of calcium carbonate sedimentation.
