A pair of Italian Rosso Verona marble thrones
Circa 1900. Carved in two sections from the solid, this design of the winged lion (the symbol of Venice) forms the seat, with the wings enfolded to create the seat back, the maned lion head becoming an arm rest and the lion’s leg and paw alluding support, with the centre base having a carved anthemion motif.
The throne seat can be traced back to Greece and Rome, with examples in museums worldwide, these seats here however were carved in the late 19th century/early 20th century during the revival of the Italian Renaissance garden with Harold Peto’s Iford Manor being a fine example.
