Slate is caused by a metamorphosis (transformation) of mudstone, which in turn is formed from clay. This
slate is mainly in the colors dark green, dark brown, dark gray and black. The stone is highly
stratified. The quarry stone plates of the rock split. This creates a natural split surface, a slate type ranges from very rough to quite smooth.
The shape of the plates (also called flagstones or cullet) is irregular. Square or rectangular
tiles are cut from the plates or cut. Clipped tiles give a bigger size deviation than the
cut tiles.
