Solnhofen limestone formed some 150 million years ago from sedimentary deposits of the Jurassic sea. Its characteristic appearance, with prehistoric patterning and fossilised organisms, natural look and special material characteristics, have brought it world renown.
Solnhofen slabs are traditionally quarried through precise handwork with hammer and chisel. This method allows polygonal stone slabs in different thicknesses to be extracted from the bedrock. These natural polygonal stone slabs are then meticulously sorted according to their thickness before being packed for transport.
