Soapstone is newly popular and can be used in many applications. Like granite, it is stain-resistant and heat-resistant. Unlike granite, it is soft, and although it scratches easily, the scratches disappear with oiling. Initial saturation with oil is required to prep the surface, and brings out the colour and beauty of the stone.

Soapstone is a popular choice for those who want the practicality of natural stone without the highly polished look of granite. It is a much better matt-finish choice than honed granite, because honed granite is significantly more porous than polished granite and so will stain and is harder to clean. Soapstone is extremely dense and non-porous and will not stain (once oiled).
