MASONRY
Lauderdale Mansions West, 2014
In late 2014 LSC was approached to quote for structural repair works to the stonework of the front façade of Lauderdale Mansions, an imposing late Victorian building in west London
Build in 1897, Lauderdale Mansions consist of red brick with elaborate Bathstone detailing on the architrave, window surrounds and pediments. As with many buildings of this period, much of the bathstone had weathered away. Furthermore, some of the stones had originally been laid in an incorrect bedding direction adding to accelerated weathering and subsequent failure of many of the building's features.
Working closely with structural engineers Checkel Dalton Associates, LSC drew up a schedule of necessary repair works. Repairs were undertaken on a like-for-like basis with new Bathstone selected to match the colour and texture of the original stone as closely as possible.
The failed stone sections were cut out to a square and sound base. LSC masons then took templates of the replacement stones, and worked the replacement sections at LSC's own masonry workshops. These new sections were then fitted on site and trimmed to match the original. Some areas were also repaired in a sympathetic lime mortar, using crushed Bathstone dust and natural hydraulic lime.
The result is truly in keeping with the Victorian masonry and enhances the overall appearance having re-established the original design intention of the building.
