Sandstone rocks are sedimentary rocks made from small grains of minerals, quartz and feldspar. It is one of old traditional materials used for construction. They are often used as building stones. For thousands of years, little pieces of our earth have been eroded-broken down and worn away by wind and water. These little bits of our earth are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of rivers, lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each other. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.
The durability of rock depends on the cementing material. It is an extremely hard and tough material, but some sandstone are so homogeneous and soft that they are capable of receiving most elaborate carving and filigree work. The color of the rock is largely determined by the cementing material. Color of sandstone is variable and depends upon the composition of the binding material, and therefore varies from red, brown, greenish, yellow, gray and white.
