Product Description
The material Breccia Capraia is extracted from our own quarry, which is unique in the world and is situated on the Apuan Alps (Massa, Tuscany), exactly on the Capraia Mountain, from which it takes its name.
The quarry, which is worked underground, produces also other kinds of precious marbles such as Fior di Pesco Apuano, Statuario, Arabescato, Calacatta and Cremo. The average production per year is about 6.000 / 7.000 tons in the form of large squared blocks.
The typical characteristics of Breccia Capraia are a warm white ground, often tending to the colour of Statuario, with a pattern of veining which can be either purplish red, or iron grey or even greenish.
This material is primarily worked in slabs and used for facing and flooring in luxury interiors. The age in which this quarry was opened is unknown, but it probably dates back to the end of 19th century, what can be proved by the still partly visible sled route (via di lizza) which was used to manually slide the blocks downhill.
One of the most valuable works presenting Breccia Capraria is the Home Savings of American Tower in Los Angeles.
Another precious marble to be extracted from Capraia Quarry is Fior di Pesco Classico Apuano, with its average production of 600 – 800 tons per year in the form of squared blocks. It is a very peculiar material which originates from the thickening of both round elements and jagged masses without a specific shape. The purplish red colour of these elements passes into the statuary white of the ground in the shape of flakes imbedded between one another. This chromatic effect is sometimes enriched by greenish veining. Fior di Pesco Classico Apuano, worked in slabs, is mainly used as facing and flooring in luxury interiors, such as private houses and yachts. In the past it was often used to decorate churches.
