It is classified as a non-recrystallised calcareous dolomite with a saccharoid texture and a beige colouring with occasional orange veining.
It comes from the basal layers of the Cretaceous period (Maastrichtian).
The material is obtained from a quarry in southern Burgos, where the slight gradient of the layers facilitates its mining.
The Crema Pinar sandstone has been used since the very early days of construction. The most important structure built with this type of sandstone is the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos.
