Stone Information

Classic travertine: if the material is painted in a beige color and uniform, it is extremely porous, compact and resistant, while the potter is spazzolato, levigato and lucidato . Because it's beautiful if it's classic and modern, it's good if it's used internally or externally.

It is one of the most used materials ever for the creation of floors, famous for its characteristics and the numerous varieties that distinguish it: we are talking about Travertine marble , an architectural solution traceable in every era.

Let's discover together everything there is to know about this prestigious marble!

features

Travertine marble is a chemical-type calcareous sedimentary rock that forms in a subaerial continental environment where the calcareous solution has had time to stagnate and settle in a flat area; the proximity to the surface and, on the contrary, the distance from spring or flowing waters favor the formation of Travertine . Its colour, due to the presence of oxides, varies from milky white to walnut, with shades ranging from yellow to red.

It is a robust, resistant and compact natural stone, used both as a construction and decoration material, both indoors and outdoors; It represents a favorite type of marble in Italy and has been used outdoors for centuries for the creation of architectural works thanks to the chromatic variety in which it appears and its technical characteristics.

The two most famous examples built with Travertine marble are the colonnade of St. Peter's Square and the Flavian Amphitheater, known today as the Colosseum, in Rome .
In Italy, the best travertines come from the Tivoli plain: the Latins called it "lapis tiburtinus", while today it is known by the name of Roman Travertine.
Travertine deposits also exist in Tuscany (the Etruscans used to extract this material in this area), in Umbria and in the Marche (the historic center of Ascoli Piceno for example, has numerous buildings made with this material). Abroad, however, it can be found in North Africa (especially in Tunisia) and Chile.

Furthermore, it comes in a great variety of finishes (rounded, patinated, antiqued, rustic), has excellent resistance to wear, to the aggression of acids, to temperature variations, to heat, to atmospheric and chemical agents and, as if this were not enough, it has a porosity that is not permeable to water: in other words, it is extremely resistant over time and this also means that it does not require any particular maintenance interventions, as well as being practically perfect for every context and use.

Where can travertine be used?

Thanks to its peculiar characteristics, it is one of the favorite building materials also in urban planning. Its presentation in different colored variations lends itself well to both the creation of modern and classic environments. Considered the favorite marble for covering floors (not being subject to signs of wear despite frequent foot traffic), it can actually be used in every room of the house, both inside and outside: in the bathroom for example, it can represent an ideal solution for sinks and showers as it is water-repellent, while, due to the same characteristics, it can also be used for swimming pool lining.

Likewise, in the kitchen it can be used to make kitchen worktops and fireplace coverings thanks to its high resistance to heat and signs of wear. Finally, speaking of flooring, it represents the ideal choice for covering stairways, especially if combined with other types of stone, to create unique and precious aesthetic solutions, with timeless beauty and elegance.
