Cava Billiemi S.r.l. owns a productive settlement on ‘Costa della Castellana’ (Palermo), which is the historical source of the grey Billiemi marble. The precious and rare semi-squared blocks of ‘Pietra di Billiemi®’ are extracted from this area. In the crushing plant, the non-marketable rocks are converted into high quality and security inert materials (chipping and sand) in a production process certified by RINA. Nowadays, Cava Billiemi S.r.l. works in an area where the mining fields of other enterprises were eroded by the past use of explosives. This quarry works through two mining authorizations of more than three millions cubic meters for the extraction of registered trademarks (‘Pietra di Billiemi®’ or ‘Marmo di Billiemi®’ or ‘Pietra Grigia di Billiemi®’ or ‘Grigio di Billiemi®’). Cava Billiemi S.r.l. has achieved its goal satisfying the market request for more than 20 years. The extraction process occurs through modern techniques and machines (without using explosives), which do not alter the internal structure of the material and make it inclined to the cutting during the other making processes. The company aims at producing a rare and precious high quality material through a traditional experience and high technology. The extracted blocks of different sizes depend not only on the different geometrical characteristics of the cultivated terraces, but also on the position and depth of the exploited vein. A block has a size of 2x2x3 meters, a volume of 12 cubic meters and a weight of 32 tons.
