Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock of argillaceous origin formed by the composition of mud and stone sediment that splits into thin, smooth-surfaced layers. Because it can be split so thinly, not surprisingly slate is a popular roofing material, but more unusually it can also be used as a work surface. Slates are suitable for flooring, wall cladding, fire places and stair treads and is ideal for patios, outdoor steps, entrance ways, kitchens, shops and restaurants.
