The Magnesium oxide (MgO) is the product of the magnesite calcination (MgCO3) and often it is also called magnesia. Through the calcination (heating at high temperature), all the evaporating substances are removed from a chemical compound, the magnesite is transformed as follows: MgCO3 – CO2 = MgO. At room temperature it looks like an odourless white solid. The calcination of magnesite at a temperature between 300 and 1200 ° C (depending on how many time it “cooks” in the furnace) produces the light magnesia, also known as caustic magnesia, used in Sorel cements. At higher temperatures, between 1.200 and 1.800 °C it becomes instead heavy magnesia used for basic refractory materials. The magnesite is also used in cements; refractories; in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient or an active principle; in therubber industry; in the paper industry; in toothpastes; in Sorel cements; in fertilizers; in the abrasive industry; in brake pads; as biocatalyzers.
